Meeting Room Conference Bars – Audio quality is “so subjective”
Meeting Room Audio Sparks a LinkedIn Storm
Earlier this week I watched meeting room audio opinions explode on my LinkedIn feed. A long-time AV mate asked a simple question:
“Need a 12-month conferencing fix in a 7 m room. Thinking of a video-conferencing soundbar. Any proven picks?”
Thirty replies landed in minutes—everything from “Model XYZ is perfect” to “soundbars are only for huddle rooms.” No one asked a single qualifying question. My friend was drowning in advice and still none the wiser.
Why Meeting Room Audio Is So Subjective
What sounds “fine” to one person can feel unusable to another. Before prescribing hardware, we must define the experience:
-
In-room listeners – Will the bar’s speakers project clearly to the back row?
-
Remote participants – Will the microphone capture voices seven metres away… without ballooning background noise?
-
Room acoustics – Does the space have glass walls or soft finishes? Acoustic context decides 50 % of the outcome.
Years of projects (and a few scars) have taught me that “good, bad, awesome” only makes sense once you pin down these expectations.
Three Questions to Ask Before Choosing a Soundbar
1️⃣ What does success sound like? Define max distance, SPL and clarity targets (e.g., STI ≥ 0.6).
2️⃣ How challenging is the room? Hard surfaces raise reverb; soft finishes absorb it. Assess before you spec.
3️⃣ Can the device scale with the furniture plan? Huddle bar today, table mics tomorrow? Pick gear that won’t box you in.

Where Remote Monitoring Fits
Even the best soundbar fails if firmware lags. A cloud dashboard alerts you when a mic drops offline and lets you reboot before users revolt. (See Crestron XiO Cloud or Q-SYS Reflect.)

Take-away
Meeting room audio is never one-size-fits-all. Qualify the goal, respect the space, and only then pick the shiny bar.
