Small Focus Rooms in your Workplace – Get the Lighting Right for VC

Why Focus-Room Lighting Can Make—or Break—Your Video Calls

Almost every meeting is now a video call, but many 1-2-person focus rooms still rely on generic ceiling panels. Poor focus room lighting casts harsh shadows, washes out skin tones and makes people hesitant to switch on their cameras—hardly ideal for client-facing calls.

I recently helped a global real-estate client design a flagship Sydney office. User workshops flagged lighting as the #1 pain-point in their current small rooms: “We look terrible on camera.” Below is the simple upgrade path we followed.

1 Add an Eye-Level Light Source

Mount a small LED light source above the display so it shines 300–350 lux on faces. This front-fill eliminates “raccoon eyes” created by overhead fixtures.

2 Choose 3000–3500 K, 90 CRI LEDs

Warmer colour temperature flatters skin and aligns with the WELL Building Standard light guidelines (https://standard.wellcertified.com/light).

3 Kill Screen Glare

Angle fixtures 30° downward or use a frosted diffuser. Glare-free screens reduce eye strain and keep participants engaged.

Before vs After
